Today’s Opportunities Bring Tomorrow’s Possibilities

While the work of an intern may not entail the most glamorous responsibilities, or even seem as thrilling as other college jobs, it may be the most important job a student can perform during their college career. In today’s tight job market, hundreds of thousands of college graduates compete against each other for an ideal job. Although all graduating students have a degree to support their hard work, few students actually have something unique to show to future employers that will set themselves apart. That’s where, I think, an internship plays an important role.

The term “internship” brought various thoughts to mind before I applied for my position at MESH, some including: runner, “coffee-grabber,” and then to my dad, visions from the movie “The Devil Wears Prada,” where a hopeless intern fell trap to a cynical boss portrayed by Meryl Streep.

Unlike my previous thoughts, and of course my dad’s, my job at MESH involves much more than running errands and grabbing coffee. My first day in the office I was asked to help with a newsletter, post pictures online, and attend a meeting with a client. Needless to say, things haven’t slowed down since then.

With little prior marketing experience, I was apprehensive with my position at MESH, but after a month of work, I feel more comfortable performing each task. I am on my way to mastering the format of a press release, researching prospective clients, and even speaking with other professionals across Baton Rouge when running my daily errands.

Out of all the tasks I complete each day, I have to say that one of my favorite things about working at MESH is attending the creative meetings every Friday. It amazes me how a team of people can creatively capture a company’s personality through color schemes and logos, and practically bring a brand to life.

While I am becoming more comfortable as an intern, I still encounter times when I feel overwhelmed with an overload of new information. However, I’m thankful I feel this way working through the challenges of an internship today than while at my first job fresh out of college tomorrow.

Through the many experiences and knowledge my internship has to offer, I hope that one day I will have a unique advantage that a degree may not offer, and have a leg up in the cutthroat world after college. For this I have my internship at MESH to thank.
